- Identify families already biking to school.
- Create a prospective route map. Use low speed neighborhood streets, greenways, and separated bike lanes as much as possible. Avoid any large hills that kids would struggle with (if possible).
- Post an information and sign-up sheet. Use existing PTA email lists, Facebook groups, and school contact lists. Put up flyers around existing bike parking and school entrances. Your signup sheet should include adult and kid names/grades, email address, phone number, and physical address for building a participant map.
- Create an email/WhatsApp group with your signups. Ask for adult volunteers that would be willing to be route captains. They will help keep the groups organized and safe during rides.
- Using the information gathered in your signup sheet, plot the signups and ask for feedback on routes. Have families try out the routes to identify any problem areas.
- Decide what school morning you are going to run the bike bus. Publish the information again with the route maps, and get even more signups.
- Ride to school, and then do it again on some regular cadence!
